So is <a href=\"http:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/John_Wanamaker\">John Wanamaker<\/a>&#8216;s famous <a title=\"quote\" href=\"http:\/\/www.brainyquote.com\/quotes\/authors\/j\/john_wanamaker.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">quote<\/a>\u00a0still the rule?<img decoding=\"async\" class=\"mce-hs-more\" style=\"height: 20px !important\" src=\"image\/gif;base64,R0lGODlhAQABAIAAAAAAAP\/\/\/yH5BAEAAAAALAAAAAABAAEAAAIBRAA7\" alt=\"\" \/><\/p>\n<p>&#8220;<em>I know half the money I spend on advertising is wasted, but I can never find out which half<\/em>.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>Many consider\u00a0Wanamaker\u00a0to\u00a0be the father of modern advertising, and so his quote continues to have traction\u00a0in the ad industry whether in articles,\u00a0panels\u00a0or\u00a0presentations.\u00a0But does this rule really hold true\u00a0today? Could the maturity of the advertising\u00a0market be so slow that an observation made\u00a0one hundred years ago is still applicable? Traditionally over the past few decades, advertising has pretty much followed the Wanamaker rule, but is this a law of nature? Maybe it\u2019s time that we revised the 50\/50 Wanamaker quote to perhaps 70\/30 or 80\/20. Or\u00a0could we actually reach 100% &#8211; and have\u00a0a full understanding and allocation of where we spend our advertising budget?<\/p>\n<p>Online advertisers tend to speak about two types of advertising:<\/p>\n<ol>\n<li><strong>Brand advertising<\/strong>. Focused on high-in-the-funnel brand awareness, traditionally via TV, where measurement can be difficult and largely\u00a0based on surveys.<\/br><\/br><\/li>\n<li><strong>Performance advertising<\/strong>. Focused lower in the\u00a0funnel with specific calls to action via digital channels with measurement based on clicks and conversions.<\/li>\n<\/ol>\n<p>Online video advertising now sits at the nexus point of performance and brand advertising,\u00a0and so it&#8217;s bringing\u00a0advertisers closer to breaking the Wanamaker 50\/50 rule. There&#8217;s a shift away from &#8216;one-to-many&#8217; to &#8216;one-to-one&#8217; which allows brand advertisers to create the most relevant possible ad experience.<\/p>\n<p>Personalization is a strong trend that leverages existing signals and profile data about the viewer to not only control &#8216;what&#8217; you show each consumer, but also &#8216;how&#8217; you do it.<\/p>\n<p>With <a href=\"http:\/\/www.mikeonads.com\/2009\/08\/30\/rtb-part-i-what-is-it\/\">Real-Time Bidding<\/a>\u00a0(RTB), you also choose &#8216;when&#8217;\u00a0to show an ad and &#8216;where,&#8217; so\u00a0to engage the\u00a0consumer where return is maximized. Obviously, by tracking consumer behavior during the ad view and post view (depending on the call to action), one can also capture the true value of each ad view.<\/p>\n<p>Using a\u00a0<a title=\"control group methodology\" href=\"http:\/\/info.sundaysky.com\/blog\/How-You-Should-Be-Measuring-Business-Video-Impact\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">control group methodology<\/a>, the incremental value of each video ad view is measured\u00a0and performance is optimized over time to deliver the best possible results for each advertising program. Mathematical tools based on machine-learning algorithms project\u00a0each ad view&#8217;s\u00a0potential value and track the performance to improve the scoring algorithm over time.
