Over the last 20 years, the web has evolved from static<\/a>,
\n manually written pages to computer generated pages, driven by data collected in databases, inputted by users and
\n computed by algorithms. SmartVideo, to me, is the natural evolution of video into the dynamic<\/a> era.
\n Instead of manually producing every single video (such as the web once was), a system is now capable of generating,
\n tailoring, personalizing, contextualizing and optimizing video based on data.\"\"<\/p>\n

This vision is made possible through a combination of several technological building blocks, known as the SmartVideo
\n technology stack. In this two-part post, which kicks off our SmartVideo Tech series, I\u2019ll describe the centerpiece
\n of this stack: video generation<\/strong>.<\/p>\n

VIDEO GENERATION<\/h3>\n

At the very core of SmartVideo is the ability to generate videos based on data. Just about any data available on the
\n web can be used to generate SmartVideo: catalogs, user profiles, search results, user input and interactions, photos
\n and videos, billing information, social connections \u2013 and more. The key enabler of\u00a0SmartVideo is technology that
\n creates millions of up-to-date, varied videos on the fly, at low cost, while maintaining creative freedom and video
\n quality.<\/p>\n

At SundaySky, our dynamic video generator is based on templates called Videolets\u2122. Each Videolet specifies how to use
\n input data to construct videos for a specific customer use case, along with a collection of all assets required to
\n construct these videos. See the below graphic to understand how it all works together.<\/p>\n

\"SmartVideo<\/strong><\/p>\n

Though\u00a0the video generator\u00a0was the very first piece of technology developed at SundaySky, it has evolved
\n substantially over the years. Our customers, partners and creative team continuously challenge SundaySky\u2019s R&D
\n group\u00a0to enable more personalized, real-time,\u00a0sophisticated videos at increasing numbers. Today, the video
\n generator\u00a0contains numerous creative capabilities, optimization tricks and operational features that push the
\n envelope of what\u2019s possible with SmartVideo.<\/p>\n

\"SmartVideo<\/p>\n

Most features\u00a0of our video generator\u00a0address two primary aspects of SmartVideo. The first is content: the ability to
\n generate a wide range of engaging videos using any input data. I\u2019ll focus on this aspect of\u00a0video generation\u00a0in
\n part\u00a0two of this post next week. The second aspect is performance, including:<\/p>\n

 <\/p>\n

\"scalable<\/p>\n

#1. Scalability<\/strong><\/p>\n

We\u2019re not talking about two, ten or even hundreds of videos. We\u2019re talking millions. Consider, for example,
\n video bills explaining the bill for each and every AT&T customer, every month. Or, videos for every product
\n in West Elm\u2019s product catalog.\u00a0Our video generator\u00a0addresses this using a highly distributed, horizontal scale-out<\/a> architecture that allows us to increase capacity by
\n adding machines to our cluster.<\/span><\/p>\n

\"Real<\/p>\n

#2. Up-to-Date and On-the-Fly<\/strong><\/p>\n

SmartVideos are data-driven and should be up-to-date with data changes. When your account balance changes your
\n account summary video should reflect that. It\u2019s one thing to generate a large number of videos once – it\u2019s
\n entirely\u00a0another to do so continuously in the face of high-frequency changes.<\/span><\/p>\n

With on-the-fly generation, videos are created at the moment they are being viewed \u2013 and not rendered in advance<\/a>. On-the-fly video generation is a boon for
\n up-to-date videos, and it opens up a large range of personalized, context-relevant, real-time use cases for
\n SmartVideo.\u00a0Our video generator\u00a0supports this by employing a timeline-driven pipeline, where elements are rendered
\n and combined in a streaming fashion, throughout the entire architecture, all the way to the user.\u00a0This pipeline
\n is\u00a0optimized and scheduled so that video reaches the user with minimal delay and no buffering.<\/p>\n

#3. Cost<\/strong><\/p>\n

For SmartVideo to be useful, the cost of generating millions of up-to-date videos cannot be prohibitive. \u2018Nuff
\n said.<\/span><\/p>\n

To minimize this cost,\u00a0the work necessary to generate each video is optimized, squeezing as much performance as
\n possible from each machine. We also use a hybrid cloud<\/a> approach to increase our resource utilization: our
\n baseline capacity is served from our owned infrastructure, while capacity spikes are served by scaling up and down
\n in the cloud.<\/p>\n

\"SmartVideo<\/p>\n

#4. Quality and Multiple Formats<\/strong><\/p>\n

Computers, tablets, mobile devices, connected TVs, and game consoles demand higher resolution videos (which are more
\n costly to produce), at varying formats, for Flash, as well as HTML5<\/a>.\u00a0Our video generator\u00a0creates multi-format videos intelligently for both
\n pre-rendered and on-the-fly generation.<\/p>\n

#5.Creative Effects<\/strong><\/p>\n

To deliver an effective, engaging message, SmartVideos contain various creative mechanisms, such as visual and audio
\n effects, transitions, layers and blending, 3D, lighting, narration, music and beat synchronization, and more. This
\n is challenging because complex effects require additional computational resources to render, increasing the cost of
\n generating videos and the time it takes to render them.<\/p>\n
